Um, mom, no..don’t do that.

This morning I came into my kitchen to find this:


Now,  anyone who has ever been to Starbucks knows the green stopper they will put in your drink to prevent spills. Somehow,  my mother can’t seem to let hers go. She, for some reason doesn’t toss them in the trash along with her cup when finished. She,  keeps the stoppers in her drink holder in her car. I’ve noticed the insanity in the car many times,  and I’ve  even said things to her about it. But today took the cake.  Today, she had washed all of the stoppers.  So, like any NORMAL human, I asked,  “Mom what the hell are you doing with those?  Did you just wash them? ?”  To which she replied, “Yes, I’m going to take them back to Starbucks.”  I about fell over…”Um, Mom, no..don’t do that. ” 
I started to crack up and had to leave before I said anything else.
The people at Starbucks probably already think she’s off her rocker, as she goes there (to the same one,  and calls all the workers by name–in the drive thru) every day maybe 3 times. Can you imagine if she would have rolled up with this crazy ass stash of USED stir sticks??! I think she owes me a coffee for saving her from her own crazy..and then,  part of me wishes I didn’t say a word but just let it happen..
I take pleasure in knowing that she will do something else just as crazy tomorrow.

Make This for Dinner


It even looked tasty raw.  I am not kidding you, you must make this for dinner one night this week.  It’s only Tuesday so you have time to get out there and shop.  My family gobbled this up in a matter of minutes, and I am telling you, it’s not easy to find a recipe that suits everyone in this house.  It’s from Rachael Ray’s September 2015 magazine.  I ripped it out on a whim thinking maybe, just maybe the family would like it.  But, of course I was worried, about the rosemary.  It’s green…shhhhh. They loved it.  Even the rosemary.  I doubled the amount of chicken, and it’s a good thing I did.  It’s gone.  Here is the recipe:

Lemon-Rosemary Roasted Chicken Thighs with Potatoes

Serves 4.  Prep 10.  Cook 35

1/4 C Olive Oil

2 Lemons- 1 zested and juiced (about 1 1/2 t. zest, 4 T juice) and thinly sliced

1 T Dijon mustard

2 Cloves garlic, minced

1 1/2 Lbs Red potatoes, cut into 1 inch cubes

1 1/2 Lbs Bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

4 Sprigs fresh rosemary (don’t cut out, it makes the dish, even if you have to remove before serving to the kids)

  1. Preheat oven to 425.  In a small bowl, whisk the oil, lemon zest, and juice, mustard and garlic; season with salt and pepper.
  2. On a rimmed baking sheet ( I covered it w/ foil…easy clean up)  toss the potatoes, chicken, rosemary and sliced lemon with the dressing, season.  Arrange the potato mixture and chicken, skin side up, in a single layer.  (I just tossed everything in a big ol’ bowl, and then used my hands to mix.  Dumped that on the foil and let it rip)
  3. Roast, turning the potatoes once, until the potatoes are golden-brown and tender and the chicken is cooked through, 35-40 min.

BAM.  You are done.  You can thank me tomorrow:)


Yep, you read that right.  Well, here’s the good news, we don’t have it.  But, a neighbor kid does, so my whole world went into a panic when I found out.  Especially since that kid was in my house over the weekend.  I basically started the “War on Lice” at 9:30 this morning and haven’t stopped.  I won’t stop until every linen has been washed in the HOTTEST water we can get.  Every toy has been bagged up and put away for a few days.  No one is allowed in my basement for 3 days to play.  Barbie’s are in a plastic bag in my garage freezer.  We have no nits, no eggs, far.  I am praying we stay that way.  Otherwise I’m shaving some heads.

Off I go, to shampoo some anti-lice prevention cream into my children’s beautiful heads of hair.  And, to do yet another load of laundry.  Sleep tight.



Finally. I have committed to a race. It’s taken me several weeks and I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s because of all the end of summer activities we have been doing. Maybe because my back was KILLING me after wooden roller coaster rides, extremely long car rides and sleeping on an air mattress.  Or maybe, those are just my excuses. Well, I’m ready. Or actually, I’m ready to get ready, for my next race. My official training program begins Monday.

Cilantro Jalapeño Hummus


My lemon hummus may be the best homemade hummus out there. ..until….I made this. Cilantro jalapeño hummus. Oh my.
The recipe came from Morgan (our old sitter, who has picked up and left us for sunny San Diego..”stay classy”..hope you get the Anchorman reference).
Anyway,  she found some store-bought cilantro jalapeño hummus and asked me to please replicate it. I wanted to,  but never had time.  Apparently she could not wait because only a few days later she sent me this recipe, and a note stating: “I am now the Rachael Legendre of cilantro jalapeño hummus.” 


This rivals my lemon hummus. No doubt. It might be better (no! ) than my lemon hummus?!


It’s delicious. You must try. We dip pita, cukes and carrots. Enjoy..and thanks for showing me up,  Morgan.

Michigan Was Beautiful. Glad We Got It In…


So you know I said I was trying to get it all in before the kids go back to school. We did a quick whirlwind trip to my dad’s lake house in Michigan. It was a 3.5 hour drive,  thank goodness it was beautiful. I was already exhausted from our trip the day before to Holiday World and back. (About 7 hours total driving in one day). We only had about 48 hours to spend in Michigan so I was going it would be worth it.
My dad’s was really nice. He has a house right on the lake, he has two boats,  it’s a pretty sweet set up. I was able to leave the kids and run around the lake both days. Not a bad, quick, vacation.
Now school goes back tomorrow for Nick…and Alexis is next Monday. I can’t wait to breathe. Which I’m sure probably won’t happen like I want it to, because I can’t sit still.
At least I know my workouts will go into a nice routine since I won’t have to worry about who’s watching the kids when I want to get a run in.

Summer is Almost Over, Better Cram it All In…


Seriously, I am looking at the end of my kids’ summer vacation.  It’s bittersweet.  Yeah, part of me is sad to see them go back to the daily “grind” of a more structured school schedule.  ( I also am not a fan of waking up early, and then proceeding to scream at them for the next hour to “EAT breakfast, BRUSH teeth, GET dressed, FIND shoes, DID YOU BRUSH yet, WHERE is your homework!”)  And, part of me is secretly super excited to see them go.  I am kind of over the whole seeing them every day for the entire day routine.  So yeah, it’s bittersweet.  I am always so ready for summer to get here, sick of the daily routine, and then somehow, I’m always ready for school to get back in.  Guess it works out for me year in and year out.

Looking at my schedule for the last week before school goes back, I realize we need to cram in a few things we haven’t done yet.  Yesterday, we took the 3 hour trip to Holiday World.  I mean, if we didn’t do something fun, what will my 4th grader write on the first day of school about his summer vacation?  It better be good, and now I’ve guaranteed that teacher an interesting essay.  I surely don’t want his paper all about going to the pool every day and playing hours of video games, do I?

Today, we are on our way to Michigan, another mini-vacation.  Just 2 nights.  With my dad and his family.  Hmmm, not much to say here.  Guess we will see how it goes and I’ll tell you about it after.  The kids really want to go, Grandpa has a boat.  With a slide!  And, he lives on a lake.  (But he also lives with his wife, and for that, we will stop all conversation here).

Better cram it all in before school starts back on Wednesday.  We will all be exhausted and hopefully fall asleep before 11pm the night before school.  Better get back to it.  Our routine for the next several months, until it’s summer again….ahhh.

No Carbs?

Today, like any other day,  I yelled down to the basement to ask the kids what they would like for lunch.  While talking to the kids,  my husband  (who many days works from home) started yelling,  “yes please!” Oh my. I want to scream. First of all,  I am not talking to you. Second,  you are annoying. Third,  you act like one of the children. So I ignore him. Then he starts saying,  “I’d like lunch please. Me please.” I can’t explain how much this bothered me. He was totally acting like a kid. I already have 2 of my own, plus my son always has a friend over.
I make lunch for the kids AND I also make lunch for my husband. I don’t say anything except that lunch is ready.
As soon as Jason walks into the kitchen,  he takes one look at the lunch I have prepared for him and says,  “I’m sorry I can’t eat this. I don’t eat carbs.”  WHAT? SINCE WHEN? 5 MINUTES AGO?? 
I wanted to stab him with my spoon. I had made brown rice with red beans and lentils. Like the most healthy lunch ever. But mister “me me me” can’t eat what I have prepared?! 


I think common courtesy would dictate telling the person who is about to possibly feed you,  that you have dietary constraints. Just saying.
So now I must rethink dinner. ..
Or maybe just let him figure it out on his own.
And,  I must say,  this no carb thing is not going to last. So he’s just burning bridges for nothing.
Look at that bowl of beautiful lentils and rice. Who wouldn’t want to eat that? !

Training for My Second Half Marathon.

I’ve decided that I need to sign up for something.  I want to sign up for a triathlon, but I am too much of a baby to get in the pool.  I already feel like I’m gonna die just swimming from one end of the neighborhood pool to the other.  How will I ever make it 350 yards?  So, I’ll just sign up for another half.  I know I can do it and I know I won’t die.  (well I hope).  Anyway, another half it is.

Jason says he is signing up for it as well.  Last time he signed up, and then totally backed out.  I think it’s cuz he knows I might just kick his ass.

Today I ran 10, just went for distance.  Slow and steady.  In training for this next half, I  am going to work on hills, and speed.    I would like to beat my time, but this race is more hilly, so we will see.  I’ll start my training tomorrow, and keep you updated on my progress.

Basically I want to beat my last time.  And I want to beat Jason.  Period.

8 Hour Endurance Run Preparation


After agreeing to be on a team to run an 8 hour endurance race, we began to prepare.  None of us had ever done anything quite like it. Don’t get me wrong, Danielle and Sarah have done their fair share of races,  Ironman,  marathons,  triathlons etc. ..
But nothing like this. So we sat down and came up with a crazy list of food, drinks and gear we might need.
This is what my list looked like before walking out the door on race day.   As
you can see,  I checked it 2-3 times and used different colored pen to make sure I didn’t forget something.
Looking back, I used less than half of the things on my list. We were very concerned with eating and drinking, and how would that go? ?  The day of the race was so hot, the heat index was 110, so clearly, eating was really not something that sounded good and really only water and a few sodas were all we needed.
I’m glad we were over prepared this year. Next year we will win, again..and be less stressed by the unknown!
I have actually put together a list of what we need so next year all we will need to do is reference it.
