This is the new Lentil Quinoa Bowl with Egg at Panera. I am writing this post in Panera as I have just finished this meal in a few minutes flat. It was by far THE BEST meal I have ever eaten at Panera, and that is saying a lot because I think their food is all really good. It has organic quinoa and organic brown rice, tomato sofrito (sauce), fresh kale & spinach all in an umami (savory) soy-miso (not salty) broth topped with a hard boiled egg. OMG delicious. I will never order anything else here again and I will figure out how to recreate this recipe at home!!
It’s the year of the goat. Or ram…or sheep. Seems like no one is sure since in Mandarin “yang” is interpreted as “horned animal.” But that isn’t why I am talking about Chinese New Year. No, it’s because, I think it’s a PERFECT time for a new year. It’s like I get a second chance. I know it’s only been about 50 days since our New Year, but you see, I have not been 100% on top of my new year’s resolutions. Today, I have a chance to correct those and get back on track. I LOVE Chinese New Year. I LOVE the year of the goat, ram or sheep…it doesn’t matter to me what the year is…it just matters that I have another chance to get it right. So I am off to my treadmill, bike and P90x videos…if you are looking for me, I’ll be the sweaty mom in the basement.
My kids come home from school famished. They want something quick and easy. Well, let’s face it, most quick and easy is not so healthy. I know they love fruit, but I wanted them to have something with a little protein too. I found this recipe, it’s quick and easy, I can make it right before they get off the bus. This recipe has been adapted from cookingclassy.com
Peanut Butter Fruit Dip
1 heaping cup of yogurt ( I use Stonyfield Organic Smooh & Creamy lowfat french vanilla)
3 T creamy peanut butter
1 T honey (or to taste)
The kids love it. I love it too. And I feel good about what they are eating after school.
(this picture is from cookingclassy.com, my fruit is not always displayed so beautifully:))
So, my husband is this super high-tech guru who knows anything and everything about downloading media for me. He gets me the best workouts, all the newest stuff, right to my TV in the basement for any workout I might like to do. So, when my super-duper easy way of turning on my workout doesn’t work properly, I get very upset. You see, I only have this small window of time (usually) to workout, and when I am ready to go, I must get it in in the time allowed or I may go, hmmm, how do I say it? CRAZY? Yeah, that’s the word. It happened today.
My Jillian Michael’s workout was totally acting up…like she would stop or go real s…l….o….w…OR, just TURN OFF !!!???@@@!!! I was ok, as I have done this particular workout a million times, so I know the routine and kept on going while trying to fix the problem. Fine. Now, Alexis has a friend over, so while I am dealing with this quirky workout, Lexi decides to go to the bathroom, breath Rachael, and LOCK the DOOR with her girlfriend in the bathroom and while Lexi POOPS. The girlfriend wants out, I want in, and Lex won’t get off the toilet to unlock the door. The girlfriend can’t figure out the lock, I am looking for a key and all the while I’m a little pissed my triceps are not getting their fair share today. I unlock the door, I get them out, Alexis gets a time out, and I go back to some triceps kickbacks. Back to finish workout….NOPE….about 2 more minutes in, Jillian has turned off mid squirm, and I hear a huge CRASH. My kid, thought it would be a good idea to climb on a chair, and get to the top of her playroom “closet” which is like a very long ballet bar, with a shelf on top and about 45 princess dresses hanging off of it. Well, said bar does not hold 45 dresses plus one 30 pound princess. Noted.
I gave up on the Jillian workout. Decided to do a P90x shoulders and arms workout I have printed out and began that. But it was snack time for the girls and no one was letting me out of that.
Tomorrow is a new day. And some people go to school on Thursday’s:)
I recorded the Grammy’s last night to watch this morning with my 4 year old daughter, who really is only interested in Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Iggy Azalea. Thank God for DVR’s. We were able to go through 4 hours of tape in 15 minutes. Here is her review:
Taylor didn’t perform, but Alexis likes her dress. And anytime Taylor was on the screen, Alexis would sing, “haters gonna hate hate hate hate….”
Katy’s performance, “Was good, but the Super Bowl was more fun to dance to.”
Beyonce, she made me fast forward, but said “she looked like an angel in her dress.” (I thought she looked tired)
Iggy was almost not even featured. I have to say, I liked her dress fine, but her hair was dumb. Alexis liked her dress, but called her hair a “canyon” Not sure what that means. When I first showed her a picture of Iggy, Alexis said, “What?! That’s Iggy Azalea?” I think she had too many clothes on for my kid to recognize…
Oh, and one she didn’t ask to see, but I played for her anyway, was Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, which she watched the whole song and seemed to enjoy, but did ask why he was so old. HA HA.
So, there you have it, the 2015 Grammy Awards, reviewed by a 4 year old.
I want to have an adult beverage tonight that will warm me up and not kill in calories. I found this recipe, and can’t wait for 5 o’clock. It even has a little added health benefit with the added lemon and honey…or at least that is what I’ll tell myself when I make myself a second drink.
1 1/2 ounces of brandy, scotch, or bourbon (let’s be honest, I’ll use Jack)
7 ounces hot water
3/4 tablespoon honey
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 star anise, cinnamon stick, or 3-5 cloves (I’ll use cinnamon only)
1-2 thin slices of lemon for garnish
Have you ever just wondered how to make exercise a habit? Some days it is hard to get that workout in. Some days we don’t feel like doing anything. Follow these 3 steps to totally change the way you think about your exercise to make it a daily habit.
#1. Put it on your calendar. Write it down. Before the next month begins, print out a calendar, just for workouts. Write down on each day what you will do and what time you will be doing the activity you have planned. DO the workout. CROSS it off. Research shows this works.
#2. Get dressed for your workout before you do anything else. No one likes to take off workout clothes that aren’t sweaty. Half the battle is getting ready. Put on your shoes. Get your gear on. This will motivate you.
#3. Focus on this system. Read your workout, get dressed to do your workout. Cross off workout when you are finished. Once you have made this system work for you, it will become a habit.
